Gertrude the Great

Gertrude the Great
(1256–c. 1302)
   Saint, Mystic and Devotional Writer.
Gertrude was born in Eisleben and was educated at the convent in Helfta in Thuringia. In 1281, at the age of twenty-five, she had her first mystical experience and from then on she led a life of contemplation. Her Legatus Divinae Pietatis is a classic of mediaeval spirituality. She was one of the first exponents of the cult of the Sacred Heart, her visions of which she described. She was also responsible for a collection of prayers known as Exercitia Spiritualia, which have been much used in Roman Catholic circles. Known as ‘Gertrude the Great’, she is the patron of the West Indies.
